Canada Type News | January 2012

Font Releases:

-Spade: It's big. It's very big. Spade is a double whammy of pure slab footprint, sharp and soft, cowboy and cowgirl, country and western, shot and chaser, settlement and new frontier. It's also quite modern in many aspects, not the least of which are the many curvy alternates included, and the smooth flow of the biform shapes when used with the main caps. Clocking in at over 670 characters per font, Spade comes loaded with very comprehensive Latin-based language support and OpenType features up to the hilt.

-Louis: Louis is a faithful digital rendition and expansion of a design called Fanfare, originally drawn by Louis Oppenheim in 1927. Redrawn digitally by Rod MacDonald, and engineered in-house by Canada Type, Louis includes the many alternates that came with the original design, and then some. It was also expanded into three variations, including a soft-cornered style, and a rough woodcut one. And of course, the codepage support covers the majority of Latin-based languages.

-Wonder Brush: Wonder Brush appears to be a straightforward narrow upright brush script. But it really is made of malleable rubber. Take it into a program like Adobe Illustrator, set something, stretch or squeeze, shear or warp, slant or transformÉ just play with it like they used to do in the 70s and 80s. You will soon discover that this font really is a big old top hat, and it's up to you and your mischief to pull rabbits or geese out of it. A single font that allows you to emphasize content or manage space mechanically without affecting the integrity of the type setting. And if your playtime includes fiddling with OpenType features, you're in for a bonus treat: Wonder Brush comes with over 800 characters, including a lot of alternates and extended language support.

-Social Stencil: This is the stencil cousin of our enormously popular Social Gothic. The stencilling is a unique treatment unlike familiar stencil acts, with round cuts through curves and straight ones through straight strokes. This treatment works well with the biform construct of the face by emphasizing its clean outlines and enhancing its minor humanist totality. Social Stencil is a multi-scipt font that contains support for most Latin-based lanugages, as well as Cyrillic and Greek. It also comes with plenty of built-in alternates.

January 2012 Notes:

- Earlier this month we sneaked in a few updates to three of our existing fonts. Luminari, VIP and Social Gothic are now multi-script fonts, with added support for Greek, Cyrillic and Vietnamese.

- As you can see, we've been keeping busy as usual. This year promises to be yet another beehive for us. We've got plenty of exciting things on the go, and we're working hard on finishing them. This is a good start for the year, and we hope to keep up the pace.

And with this we conclude our latest. We hope you like them and find them useful in your work. Until next time, stay well and keep on designing.
